Ho scelto di leggere 1980 prima di capire che si trattava del terzo libro di una quadrilogia. Per fortuna è leggibile anche singolarmente e non ho avuto l’impressione che mi mancasse qualcosa scritto prima. Questo probabilmente anche a causa dello stile, talmente essenziale e così poco narrativo.
Il titolo della serie è Red Riding Quartet, con un’allusione non velata a Cappuccetto Rosso (qui il rosso fa riferimento al colore politico dei socialisti) e al fatto che si tratta, appunto, di quattro libri. Naturalmente il riferimento è anche geografico e riguarda la zona dello Yorkshire in cui avvennero i delitti dello Squartatore (West Riding).
Dalla storia vera, che di per sé è raccapricciante, Peace ricava un’ambientazione infernale, uno Yorkshire (di cui Leeds è simbolo) marcio e senza speranze.
L’hanno definito “una fotografia dell'Inghilterra thatcheriana”: declino industriale, violenza, sfiducia nelle istituzioni. In effetti, l’ho trovato molto cupo. Inoltre, lo stile personale di Peace rallenta molto la lettura e la rende in qualche modo sincopata… mi sono ritrovata spesso a rileggere passaggi incompleti o a saltare brani interi fatti di ripetizioni. Ma devo anche ammettere che in qualche modo è riuscito a mantenere la mia attenzione sui fatti narrati e a non perdere il filo.
Contemporaneamente stavo guardando una serie Netflix con qualche assonanza: si tratta di Unbelievable, dove uno stupratore seriale viene inchiodato grazie alle deduzioni di una investigatrice. Nel caso abbiate amato questo libro... ve la consiglio (o viceversa).
1980: under the Yorkshire dark sky
I’ve chosen 1980 before realizing it was the third book in a series. Fortunately, it can be read as a standalone, and I didn't feel like I was missing anything. This is probably also due to Peace’s style, which is very essential. The series is called the Red Riding Quartet, with an unmistakable allusion to Little Red Riding Hood (here, red refers to the political color of the socialists) and the fact that there are, indeed, four books. The reference is also geographical, concerning the area of Yorkshire where the Ripper's crimes took place (West Riding). From the true story, which is gruesome in itself, Peace crafts a hellish setting—a rotten and hopeless Yorkshire, of which Leeds is the symbol. It has been described as "a snapshot of Thatcherite England": industrial decline, violence, a loss of faith in institutions. Indeed, I found it very dark. Moreover, Peace's personal style slows down the reading significantly and makes it somewhat syncopated... I often found myself rereading passages or skipping entire sections made up of repetitions. But I must also admit that somehow he still managed to keep my attention on the narrated events. At the same time, I was watching a Netflix series with some thematic resonance: Unbelievable, where a serial rapist is cornered thanks to the deductions of a female detective. If you loved this book… then you’ll have to watch it.
