Nata in Inghilterra da madre francese e padre inglese, educata in convento fino al college (Londra), ha girato il mondo vivendo anche in Italia e Thailandia. Ha vissuto intensamente gli anni del femminismo radicale (1970) che hanno profondamente influenzato la sua scrittura, soprattutto agli inizi. I suoi romanzi tendono ad affrontare questioni quali il ruolo della donna nella Storia e minano il concetto stesso di Storia, fornendo punti di vista diversi su personaggi realmente esistiti le cui storie si mescolano con protagonisti ignoti e assolutamente ordinari, riuscendo a mescolare basi storiche e invenzione. C’è sempre una riflessione sulla scrittura, attraverso un personaggio che in qualche modo scrive: questo le consente di veicolare anche importanti riflessioni sul ruolo dello scrittore e sulla soggettività della narrazione.
E’ solita esplorare le divisioni temporali e spaziali, disgregando in qualche modo la narrazione lineare e mescolando le culture (francese e inglese in particolare). Questo dona alle sue opere un respiro cosmopolita.
Le traduzioni italiane si limitano a due vecchie edizioni: Daughters of the House (Figlie della casa - Tufani Editrice, 1999), Impossible Saints (Sante impossibili - Tufani Editrice, 2001).

Born in England of a French mother and English father, she was educated in a convent until college (in London). She has travelled the world living in Italy and Thailand, too. She lived intensely the radical feminism of the 1970s with a deep influence on her writing, especially in the beginning. Her novels tend to deal with the role of women in History, undermining the concept of History itself and providing different points of view on real historical figures. Their stories mix with unknown and absolutely ordinary characters so that history and invention combine. There is always some reflection on writing, usually through a character who is a writer: the role of a writer, the subjectivity of narration are often the focus of important speculation.
She often explores time and spatial divisions, disrupting the linear plot and mixing cultures (French and English in particular) which gives her works a cosmopolitan touch.
