Nata nel 1972 nel Buckinghamshire, Sarah Pinborough rappresenta una delle figure più poliedriche della narrativa britannica contemporanea.

Il suo percorso letterario inizia con l'horror puro, per poi migrare verso un thriller "contaminato" in cui convivono gotico, realismo magico e suggestioni fiabesche, confermandosi un’autrice capace di una sperimentazione costante.

Figlia di un diplomatico, ha trascorso l'infanzia viaggiando per il mondo, un nomadismo che ha certamente arricchito il suo bagaglio culturale ma che ha trovato un brusco arresto a otto anni, quando fu mandata in un collegio inglese dove rimase per un decennio: un’esperienza che lei stessa definisce non positiva e caratterizzata da ansie, paure e solitudine. Ha lavorato per sei anni come insegnante di scuola secondaria, cosa che le ha permesso di affinare una profonda conoscenza della psicologia adolescenziale.

Oggi il suo nome è legato alla celebre serie di rivisitazioni dark delle fiabe classiche (Poison, Charm e Beauty) e, soprattutto, al fenomeno Dietro i suoi occhi (Behind Her Eyes)... un romanzo che è presto diventato una seguitissima serie Netflix, sdoganando il suo stile e rendendo virale l'hashtag #WTFthatending per descrivere quei finali così spiazzanti da riscrivere completamente la natura della storia nelle ultime pagine.

Sarah Pinborough affronta la scrittura con un approccio quasi scientifico: la sua è una routine rigorosa basata su una progettazione millimetrica… prima di iniziare la stesura, l'autrice riempie quaderni di diagrammi a ragno e sequenze cronologiche dettagliate. 

Nelle sue opere emergono con forza alcuni temi cardine: la follia e l'ossessione (il confine sottile tra realtà e paranoia); l'ereditarietà del male (segreti familiari che si tramandano come condanne); il controllo e le relazioni tossiche.

Recentemente, sta tornando a esplorare atmosfere gotiche e dark. Che sia un ritorno alle origini o una sapiente interpretazione del trend "New Gothic"?

Born in 1972 in Buckinghamshire, Sarah Pinborough is one of the most versatile figures in contemporary British fiction. Her literary journey began with pure horror before shifting toward a "blended" thriller style where Gothic elements, magical realism, and fairy-tale influences coexist, making her an author capable of constant experimentation.

The daughter of a diplomat, she spent her childhood traveling the world. This nomadism certainly enriched her cultural background, but it came to an abrupt halt at the age of eight when she was sent to an English boarding school for a decade—an experience she describes as negative, marked by anxiety, fear, and loneliness. She worked as a secondary school teacher for six years, a role that allowed her to gain a deep understanding of adolescent psychology.

Today, her name is tied to the famous series of dark retellings of classic fairy tales (Poison, Charm, and Beauty) and, above all, to the phenomenon Behind Her Eyes... a novel that quickly became a hit Netflix series, popularizing her style and making the hashtag #WTFthatending go viral.

Sarah Pinborough approaches writing with an almost scientific method: hers is a rigorous routine based on meticulous planning. Before starting the actual drafting, the author fills notebooks with diagrams and detailed chronological sequences.

Several key themes emerge strongly in her work: madness and obsession (the thin line between reality and paranoia); the inheritance of evil (family secrets passed down like curses); and toxic relationships.

Recently, she has returned to exploring Gothic and dark atmospheres. Is this a return to her roots or a clever interpretation of the "New Gothic" trend?

Una storia gotica che dovrebbe mettere i brividi. 

Che appartenga al genere gotico, il gothic revival che ha preso piede recentemente, non vi è dubbio: l’autrice mescola storia, folklore e superstizione (con uno sguardo a un grande classico della letteratura gotica, di Charles Robert Maturin… e scomodando anche Hitchcock) per creare delle atmosfere paurose. Che metta i brividi… qualche dubbio ce l’ho. 

Sicuramente di Sarah Perry ho apprezzato molto di più Il serpente dell’Essex, un’operazione simile ma con una storia a mio parere più coinvolgente. 

Il racconto è inframmezzato da una serie di altri testi, antichi manoscritti ritrovati e lettere, che gradualmente svelano il mistero ed hanno la funzione di costruire il crescendo di angoscia e terrore della protagonista, Helen Franklin, in una Praga contemporanea. 

Un libro invernale, freddo e cupo come il paesaggio che circonda i personaggi e, soprattutto, ne caratterizza il passato. 

Il passato mi è sembrato il vero protagonista della storia: un passato che non perdona e non si dimentica, che entra nelle ossa e nel cuore, lasciando tracce indelebili e ricordi che tormentano la mente. È come un'ombra che si proietta sul presente e nella vita di Helen (e non solo). Ciascuno deve fare i conti con il proprio passato e per alcuni questi conti non tornano. È qui che compare Melmoth, quando i conti non tornano (e non entro nel dettaglio per non spoilerare).

MELMOTH: EERIE ATMOSPHERE... BUT WHERE ARE THE CHILLS?

A Gothic tale that is supposed to send shivers down your spine. There is no doubt it belongs to the genre, specifically the Gothic Revival that has recently gained momentum; the author blends history, folklore, and superstition (nodding to a great classic of Gothic literature by Charles Robert Maturin… and even summoning Hitchcock) to create an eerie atmosphere. As for the "shivers," however… I have my doubts. By Sarah Perry I liked The Essex Serpent much more—a similar operation, but with a story that was, in my opinion, far more engaging. The narrative is interspersed with various other texts—recovered ancient manuscripts and letters—which gradually unravel the mystery. These fragments are designed to build a crescendo of anguish and terror for the protagonist, Helen Franklin, in a contemporary Prague. It is a winter book: cold and gloomy like the landscape that surrounds the characters and, above all, defines their history. The past is the true protagonist of the story: a past that neither forgives nor forgets, one that seeps into your bones and heart, leaving indelible traces and memories that haunt the mind. It is like a shadow cast over the present and over Helen’s life. Everyone must settle their accounts with the past, and for some, the math simply doesn't add up. That is when Melmoth appears—when the accounts remain unsettled (but I won’t go into detail to avoid spoilers).

Il serpente dell'Essex: tra religione, folclore e scienza

Romanzo storico ambientato nell’Inghilterra vittoriana con un tocco gotico e una ricchezza tematica davvero invidiabili. 

La storia è quella di Cora Seaborne che, una volta rimasta vedova, si riappropria della propria personalità e si trasferisce nell’Essex a caccia di fossili sulle scie della sua eroina, Mary Anning. 

Dalla scienza alla superstizione il passo è breve: una ‘bestia’ misteriosa sembra attendere nelle acque del Blackwater e terrorizza gli abitanti del villaggio. 

Ma attorno a questo canovaccio c’è molto di più: lo scontro tra fede, nella persona di William Ransome, e scienza, nel medico Luke Garrett; il femminismo vittoriano, incarnato da Martha e da Cora stessa, che smette di curarsi del suo aspetto e gira con giacche da uomo; la superstizione degli abitanti di Aldwinter ma anche i demoni interiori di ciascun personaggio… per non parlare del paesaggio stesso dell’Essex, quasi una creatura dai tanti volti con le sue paludi, i boschi, le nebbie.

Con uno stile accattivante, ricco e profondo, Sarah Perry mi ha trasportata in un luogo e in un’epoca lontani e mi ha tenuta in ostaggio fino all’ultima parola. Non mi stupisco che appena pubblicato diventò presto un grande successo. 

Ne hanno fatto anche una miniserie tv con Claire Danes, Tom Hiddleston e Clémence Poésy, che ovviamente ho guardato. Nonostante gli attori bravissimi, l’ho trovata un po’ lenta e non ho apprezzato i vari cambiamenti alla trama del libro. Piacevole, comunque… mi ha chiarito il tipo di paesaggio che in realtà avevo immaginato diverso.

THE ESSEX SERPENT: BETWEEN RELIGION, FOLKLORE, AND SCIENCE

A historical novel set in Victorian England with a gothic touch and a truly enviable thematic richness. The story follows Cora Seaborne who, once widowed, reclaims her personality and moves to Essex to hunt for fossils in the footsteps of her heroine, Mary Anning. From science to superstition is but a short step: a mysterious 'beast' seems to be waiting in the waters of the Blackwater, terrifying the villagers. But there is much more around this framework: the clash between faith, represented by William Ransome, and science, in the person of the doctor Luke Garrett; Victorian feminism, embodied by Martha and Cora herself, who stops caring about her appearance and walks around in men's jackets; the superstition of the inhabitants of Aldwinter, but also the inner demons of each character... not to mention the Essex landscape itself, almost a multi-faced creature with its marshes, woods, and mists. With an engaging, rich, and profound style, the author transported me to a distant place and time and held me hostage until the very last word. I am not surprised that it quickly became a great success after its publication. There’s also a TV miniseries starring Claire Danes, Tom Hiddleston, and Clémence Poésy, which I’ve obviously watched. Despite the excellent actors, I found it a bit slow and didn't appreciate the various changes to the book's plot. Pleasant, nonetheless... it clarified the type of landscape for me, which I had actually imagined differently.

Sarah Perry è una scrittrice inglese nota per la capacità di mescolare elementi di narrativa storica, horror e letteratura gotica. La sua scrittura è stata lodata per la profondità dei personaggi, la raffinatezza dello stile e la capacità di creare atmosfere evocative e inquietanti.

Sarah è cresciuta in una comunità cristiana battista molto rigida. Da bambina non le era permesso ascoltare musica pop o guardare molta TV; questo isolamento l'ha portata a nutrire la sua immaginazione con la Bibbia e la letteratura classica… probabilmente è per questo che le sue opere spesso esplorano tematiche legate alla spiritualità, alla fede, a cui si aggiungono la storia e la natura, questioni di identità e di rapporto tra l’uomo e il mondo che lo circonda. 

Tra i suoi romanzi più noti spicca Il serpente dell'Essex, pubblicato nel 2016, che ha riscosso un enorme successo di critica e pubblico e che ho scelto di leggere per primo. 

L’Essex è ricorrente come ambientazione e viene spesso descritta come un luogo magico, nebbioso e ancestrale, quasi come se fosse un personaggio vivo capace di influenzare il destino degli uomini.

Sarah Perry is an English writer renowned for her ability to blend elements of historical fiction, horror, and Gothic literature. Her writing has been praised for its character depth, stylistic sophistication, and the power to create evocative and unsettling atmospheres.

Perry was raised in a very strict Baptist community. As a child, she was not allowed to listen to pop music or watch television; this isolation led her to nourish her imagination with the Bible and classical literature. This is likely why her works frequently explore themes of spirituality and faith, alongside history and nature, as well as questions of identity and the relationship between humanity and the surrounding world.

Among her most famous novels, The Essex Serpent, published in 2016, stands out. It achieved critical and popular success and is the book I have chosen to read first.
