IN CAMMINO: quando la migrazione diventa poesia

Poesie migranti: è il sottotitolo di questa raccolta, che sembra assegnare alle poesie lo stesso status delle persone di cui trattano. Se il significato principale di migrante è legato allo spostamento, possiamo coglierne anche un significato metaforico: uno spostamento di sensi e di significati.

Questo libretto, breve ma denso (di contenuti, di valori, di bellezza…) è anche illustrato da Quentin Blake. I suoi disegni vengono definiti da Michael Rosen stesso ‘persone che attraversano la storia’... dove il senso del migrante si mescola con quello del pellegrino.

Ancora una volta Michael Rosen esplora le proprie origini, riflette sulla storia della propria famiglia… e ne tira fuori poesia. L’aveva già capito con The Missing: il materiale umano è materiale poetico. Ma non si parla solo di famiglia: si parla anche di amicizia, di guerra, di Storia, di presente e di futuro.

ON THE MOVE: WHEN MIGRATION BECOMES POETRY

Poems about migration: that’s the subtitle of the collection. But we can also say migrant poems, assigning to the poems the same status of the people referred to. If the main meaning of the word migrant is linked to transfer, we can also see a metaphorical reference: a shift of meaning and significance.

This short collection, short but intense (full of contents, meanings, connotations…) is also illustrated by Quentin Blake. According to Rosen his drawings portray ‘people crossing History’... where migrants can be confused with peregrines.

Michael Rosen, once again, deals with his origins, reflects on his family history… and makes poetry with that material. He had already understood that with The Missing:  human material is poetic material. But it’s not only about family: it’s also about friendship, war, History, present and future.

Moonlight Travellers: viaggio artistico nel mondo dei sogni

Quando le menti di due grandi artisti gravitano attorno allo stesso tema, i risultati sono sorprendenti. Tutto è iniziato con una mostra dedicata al viaggio, nella quale Quentin Blake (conosciuto soprattutto per le illustrazioni ai libri di Roald Dahl) ha dato sfogo alla fantasia immaginando creature e veicoli straordinari. Una parte di quelle opere aveva un carattere notturno, tanto che l’artista scelse di chiamarle ‘The Moonlight Travellers’. 

A questo punto entra in gioco Will Self, che partendo dalle suggestioni delle tavole di Blake, crea un testo che veicola quelle stesse emozioni e sensazioni. Ne emerge un percorso surreale e visionario, con un linguaggio assolutamente poetico che, in qualche modo, trasporta il lettore in un’atmosfera da sogno, anzi da dormiveglia… come quando da piccoli ci addormentavamo in viaggio e venivano riportati nel lettuccio dalle forti braccia di un genitore, fiduciosi e al sicuro. E’ una metafora a cui Will Self ricorre spesso nel testo: “Is there anything sweeter than this, the enfolding arms that are both impersonal and unimpeachably intimate?”

I cinque brevi capitoli sono il racconto poetico di cinque viaggi immaginati sui veicoli disegnati da Blake e li includono tutti: dapprima per mare, poi a dorso di una strana creatura, su un’autovettura, ed infine per aria. Il viaggio notturno ha qualità magiche: 

“to journey by day is to make prosaic progress straight from A to B, but the moonlight traveller flits from L to O, to V and E..:”

Bellissimo il book trailer online sul canale YouTube della casa editrice, Thames & Hudson, che ti catapulta nelle atmosfere immaginate dai due artisti. 

P.S.: avevo scelto di leggere anche London di Will Self, ma mi sono resa conto di avere aspettative molto molto diverse rispetto ai contenuti del libro. Si tratta di una scelta di articoli scritti tra 1990 e il 2000 su questioni varie, dalla politica alla cultura. Nell’introduzione dichiara di voler “aiutare gli italiani a comprendere il vero carattere della Gran Bretagna attuale”, ma quello che ho riscontrato io è un livore accanito verso la monarchia, il governo… e gli inglesi stessi. Ne emerge un’immagine decadente e corrotta che, francamente, mi sembra troppo di parte. Ad un certo punto mi sono arresa e ho chiuso il libro. 

MOONLIGHT TRAVELLERS: ARTISTIC JOURNEY INTO THE WORLD OF DREAMS

When two great minds’ thoughts gravitate around the same topic, the results are surprising. 

It all started with an exhibition dedicated to travelling, where Quentin Blake (known above all for his illustrations of Roald Dahl’s books) gave vent to fantasy picturing extraordinary creatures and vehicles. 

A part of his works had a peculiar nocturnal character, so much so that the artist titled them ‘The Moonlight Travellers’. That’s where Will Self came into play and, starting from the suggestions in Blake’s illustrations, he wrote a text that conveys the same emotions. What emerges is a surreal and visionary journey, with an absolutely poetic language that somehow carries the reader in a dreamy atmosphere, or rather half-sleep… such as when we were little kids and fell asleep during a journey and then we were brought to our bed by a parent… trusting, safe. Will Self often resorts to that metaphor in the text: “Is there anything sweeter than this, the enfolding arms that are both impersonal and unimpeachably intimate?”

His five short chapters are the poetic tale of five imaginary journeys by the strange vehicles designed by Blake and include them all: firstly a sea voyage, then on the back of a strange creature, by car and finally through the air. The nocturnal journey has magic qualities: “to journey by day is to make prosaic progress straight from A to B, but the moonlight traveller flits from L to O, to V and E…”

The online booktrailer on the YouTube channel of the publishing house (Thames & Hudson) is beautiful:  it throws you into the atmosphere envisioned by the two artists. 

P.S.: I had also decided to read London by Will Self, but i soon realized that I had very different expectations on the contents of the book. It’ a selection of articles written between 1990 and 2000 on various matters, from politics to culture. In the preface the author tells about his intention to “help the italians understand the true character of current Great Britain”, but what I was reading was a fierce spite of the monarchy and the government… as well as the British. What emerges is a decaying, rotten picture that, honestly, is too biased. I finally gave up and closed the book.
