IL SAGGIO (DI) PAXMAN CHE DECODIFICA LO SPIRITO INGLESE

Giornalista arcinoto nel Regno Unito con una formazione di tutto rispetto, che rientra a pieno titolo in quella élite su cui tanto ironizza lui stesso (probabilmente proprio perchè la conosce bene). 

Le sue analisi storiche gli hanno consentito una conoscenza approfondita dello spirito britannico, che ci ha servito nel libro The English, nel quale esplora le radici del carattere inglese con un tono che oscilla tra il cinismo e l’ironia. 

Nel 2021 ha annunciato di essere affetto dal morbo di Parkinson e i suoi scritti sono diventati più intimi e riflessivi. 

Ho scelto di leggere The English di Jeremy Paxman perché lo trovo il completamento perfetto del mio  percorso di esplorazione sull'identità e lo spirito britannico. Mentre solitamente più che spiegarne le ragioni, si offre una panoramica sulle caratteristiche che contraddistinguono e accomunano gli inglesi, il libro di Paxman scava nella storia e cerca le origini di tali comportamenti e modi di pensare. L'autore ne indaga le radici istituzionali, sociali ed educative, smontando luoghi comuni con un'ironia sottile e tagliente. È un viaggio che unisce sociologia e storia nazionale, ideale per capire cosa si nasconde davvero dietro la proverbiale facciata di composta eccentricità inglese.

Pur essendo un’opera datata (parliamo di quasi 20 anni fa), il fatto che la ricerca sia rivolta al passato non ne cambia l’apporto. Probabilmente diversi atteggiamenti si sono ulteriormente modificati ma lo spirito rimane. La tesi principale ruota attorno alla sensazione più o meno generalizzata di smarrimento, una sorta di crisi d’identità degli inglesi che ha toccato il vertice proprio nel periodo in cui il libro è stato scritto. Una sensazione abbastanza diffusa le cui origini Paxman ravvisa nella perdita dell’Impero, nello sgretolarsi della cultura elitaria (the Breed) e nel costante sentimento di nostalgia degli inglesi verso un passato che non esiste più… un costante contrasto interiore (ad esempio la descrizione di un idillio nella campagna inglese e la realtà di una vita cittadina industriale).

Il tutto con uno stile molto ironico e ricco di aneddoti. 

Insomma, questo libro ha ancora qualcosa da spiegare, anzi, riesce a gettare una luce anche su  alcuni eventi successivi (come la Brexit).

PAXMAN’S ESSAY DECODING THE ENGLISH SPIRIT

A well-known journalist with a respectable background in the UK, a writer who fully belongs to that elite he pokes fun at so much (because he knows it so well). His historical analyses have given him a deep understanding of the British spirit, which he served up to us in the book The English, exploring the roots of the English character with a tone that oscillates between cynicism and irony. In 2021 he announced he was suffering from Parkinson's disease, and his writings have since become more intimate and reflective.

I chose to read Jeremy Paxman's The English because I find it the perfect completion of my journey exploring British identity and spirit. While usually, rather than explaining the reasons, books offer an overview of the characteristics that distinguish and unite the English, Paxman's book digs into history and seeks the reasons behind such behaviors and ways of thinking. The author investigates their institutional, social, and educational roots, dismantling commonplaces with a subtle and sharp irony. It is a journey combining sociology and national history, ideal for understanding what truly hides behind the proverbial facade of composed English eccentricity.

Despite being a dated work (we are talking about nearly 20 years ago), the fact that the research looks to the past does not diminish its contribution. Several attitudes have likely changed further, but the spirit remains. The main thesis revolves around a more or less generalized sense of bewilderment, a sort of identity crisis among the English that peaked right around the period the book was written. A fairly widespread feeling whose origins Paxman traces in the loss of empire, the crumbling of elite culture ("the Breed"), and the constant feeling of nostalgia the English hold toward a past that no longer exists... a constant inner contrast (for example, the description of an idyll in the English countryside versus the reality of industrial city life).

All of this is delivered with a highly ironic style rich in anecdotes.

In short, this book still has something to explain; for example, it manages to shed light even on some subsequent events (such as Brexit).
