Nativo dello Yorkshire, ha vissuto a Istanbul e Tokyo. E’ noto soprattutto per la quadrilogia noir Red Riding Quartet, dedicata allo Squartatore dello Yorkshire.
Lo stile di David Peace è la sua caratteristica più distintiva ed è anche ciò che te lo fa amare o odiare, senza vie di mezzo. E’ stato definito ‘realismo allucinato’ ed è caratterizzato da frasi frammentate, spesso interrotte o ripetute all’ossessione, che creano un’atmosfera opprimente.
E’ un modo per riflettere la mente dei personaggi ed è accompagnato da una grande precisione di dettagli per quanto riguarda i fatti storici di cui narra.
E’ una sorta di incrocio tra James Ellroy e T. S. Eliot, un connubio che lo ha reso uno dei più importanti scrittori britannici della sua generazione.
Una delle tematiche ricorrenti nelle sue storie è il passato, visto come qualcosa che incombe sul presente, ma anche la corruzione (in particolare delle figure istituzionali) e una critica all’Inghilterra thatcheriana.
Nel 2003 la rivista Granta lo ha incluso tra i 20 migliori giovani romanzieri britannici.
