Max Porter ha rapidamente conquistato l'attenzione grazie al suo stile innovativo e alla profonda esplorazione di temi universali come il lutto, la perdita e l'identità. Prima di dedicarsi interamente alla scrittura,  ha lavorato come libraio ed editore per Granta. 

I temi che tratta nelle sue opere sono parte di lui: la perdita della madre quando aveva solo sei anni è un'esperienza che ha profondamente segnato la sua vita e che si riflette in modo potente nel suo romanzo d'esordio, “Grief Is the Thing With Feahters” nel quale il corvo funge da metafora per il lutto. 

Anche i romanzi successivi, comunque, sono caratterizzati da tematiche forti come la diversità, il processo creativo quasi ossessivo, la crisi di identità, la rabbia giovanile… insomma, uno speleologo di quel lato oscuro dell’animo umano. 

MAX PORTER: AN EXPLORER OF GRIEF

Max Porter quickly captured attention thanks to his innovative style and deep exploration of universal themes like grief, loss, and identity. Before dedicating himself entirely to writing, he worked as a bookseller and editor for Granta.

The themes he addresses in his works are a part of him: the loss of his mother when he was just six years old is an experience that profoundly marked his life and is powerfully reflected in his debut novel, "Grief Is the Thing With Feathers," in which the crow serves as a metaphor for grief. His subsequent novels are also characterized by powerful themes such as diversity, the almost obsessive creative process, identity crisis, and youthful rage... in short, he is a speleologist of the darker side of the human soul.

Questo libro mi ha catturata ancora prima di comperarlo per la bellissima copertina e per il fatto che era illustrato (ho sempre avuto un debole per i libri illustrati). 

La storia dietro al libro è semplice e particolare al tempo stesso: Preston racconta di come, da ragazzino, si appassionò al birdwatching ma, soprattutto, di come è riuscito a trasformare questa sua passione quando lo studio e il lavoro non gli consentivano più di passare ore all’aperto ad osservare i suoi amati volatili. 

E’ nata così: un’intuizione da una poesia su un uccello trovata in un’antologia… l’impulso di trascriverla… l’inizio di quello che sarebbe diventato un birdwatching letterario (bird...quoting?). Questa idea mi è piaciuta tantissimo, dato che anch’io avevo il mio quadernetto dove trascrivere i brani che preferivo dai libri che leggevo. 

Questo volume è davvero godibile: Preston suddivide le citazioni per specie, creando una sorta di guida illustrata che però contiene un po’ di tutto. Qui Preston ci racconta molto del ragazzino che è stato e si racconta molto, con un tono colloquiale, conversazionale che rende la lettura molto piacevole. All’interno di questa cornice ‘personale’ inserisce le citazioni letterarie trovate negli anni per ogni specie (e sono tantissime) assieme a varie curiosità sugli autori e sulle opere… e anche qualcuna sulla realizzazione di questo libro con Neil Gower. 

In conclusione, è un’opera gradevolissima da leggere (soprattutto per chi ama la letteratura), e da guardare (perché le illustrazioni di Neil Gower sono deliziose).

AS KINGFISHERS CATCH FIRE: A LITERARY BIRDWATCHING

This book attracted my attention thanks to its beautiful cover and the fact that it was illustrated (I've always had a soft spot for illustrated books). The story behind the book is simple yet unique: Preston tells how, as a boy, he became passionate about birdwatching but, more importantly, how he managed to transform this passion when his studies and work no longer allowed him to spend hours outdoors observing his beloved birds.

That's how it was born: an intuition from a poem about a bird found in an anthology... the impulse to transcribe it... the beginning of what would become a literary birdwatching ("bird…quoting?"). I really loved this idea, since I also used to have my own notebook where I transcribed my favorite passages from the books I was reading.

This volume is truly enjoyable. Preston divides the quotes by species, creating a sort of illustrated guide that, however, contains a bit of everything. Here, Preston tells us a lot about the boy he was, sharing a lot about himself with a conversational, colloquial tone that makes for a very pleasant read. Within this "personal" framework, he includes the literary quotes he found over the years for each species (and there are many), along with various curiosities about the authors and their works... and even some about the creation of this book with Neil Gower.

In conclusion, it's a very delightful work to read (especially for those who love literature) and to look at, because Neil Gower's illustrations are lovely.

ALEX PRESTON: LUCI E OMBRE DELLA CITTA’ MODERNA

Nato a Worthing, ha studiato ad Oxford e lavorato nel mondo della finanza per tornare alla letteratura sotto la veste di scrittore dopo la crisi finanziaria del 2000. 

I suoi romanzi hanno avuto successo sia di pubblico che di critica: è stato acclamato per la capacità di trattare temi contemporanei, ma è stato apprezzato anche per l'accuratezza nei romanzi storici, nei quali comunque tocca temi complessi. 

Il tema della città moderna, con le sue complessità e le sue contraddizioni, è centrale nell'opera di Alex Preston, in particolare nel suo acclamato romanzo d'esordio, This Bleeding City, ambientato durante la crisi finanziaria del 2008 e che è stato molto influenzato dalla sua esperienza lavorativa.

Oggi vive nel Kent e insegna scrittura creativa, organizza e partecipa a festival letterari, scrive regolarmente per i maggiori quotidiani e giornali inglesi e americani. Insomma, è culturalmente molto impegnato e non si fossilizza nella sua scrittura. 

Ho letto la sua bibliografia e, stranamente, non ho scelto di cominciare con un romanzo, ma con As Kingfishers Catch Fire, perchè ho sempre subito il fascino del birdwatching (nonostante il mio terrore per i pennuti).

ALEX PRESTON: LIGHT AND SHADOWS OF THE MODERN CITY

Born in Worthing, he studied at Oxford and worked in the finance world before returning to literature as a writer after the 2000 financial crisis. His novels have achieved success both critically and publicly: he has been acclaimed for his ability to address contemporary themes, but has also been appreciated for his accuracy in historical novels, which often touch complex issues. The theme of the modern city, with its complexities and contradictions, is central to Alex Preston’s work, particularly in his acclaimed debut novel, "This Bleeding City," set during the 2008 financial crisis and heavily influenced by his professional experience.

Today he lives in Kent and teaches creative writing, organizes and takes part to literary festivals, and regularly writes for major British and American newspapers and magazines. In short, he is highly engaged culturally and does not become stagnant in his writing.

I have read his bibliography and, surprisingly, I chose not to start with a novel, but with “As Kingfishers Catch Fire,” because I have always been fascinated by birdwatching (despite my terror of birds).

Con questo testo Clare Pollard conferma definitivamente il suo interesse per lo storytelling: un po’ storia del libro illustrato, un po’ approfondimento, un po’ diario di lettura e un po’ memoir… questo libro ci accompagna in una passeggiata nel tempo, ripercorrendo in ordine cronologico i maggiori testi illustrati per bambini, ci racconta degli autori e di come siano arrivati a quelle storie, ci racconta anche un po’ di sè e della sua infanzia, ma ci offre anche interessanti interpretazioni di queste fiabe che possono apparentemente sembrare innocenti e spensierate ma, a ben guardare, sono spesso utili e talvolta crudeli insegnamenti di vita… ma non sempre. 

Talvolta le ferite che la vita ha inferto a uno scrittore si trasformano magicamente in meravigliose e commoventi storie che emozioneranno i piccoli lettori di tutto il mondo.

FIERCE BAD RABBITS: THE STORIES BEHIND FAIRY TALES

With this text, Clare Pollard definitively confirms her interest in storytelling: part picture book history, part analysis, part reading journal, and part memoir… this book takes us on a walk through time, recounting in chronological order the major illustrated texts for children. It tells us about the authors and how they arrived at those stories. The author shares a bit about herself and her childhood, and also offers interesting interpretations of those fairy tales, which may seem innocent and carefree at first glance but, upon closer inspection, often contain useful and sometimes cruel life lessons… but not always. Sometimes, the wounds inflicted by life on a writer are magically transformed into wonderful and moving stories that will touch young readers around the world.
