Read it in English

STONE VIRGIN: THE STORY OF A CURSED STATUE
I’ve chosen Stone Virgin for the setting, Venice. After appreciating Mrs Garnet’s Angel, I couldn’t wait to feel the atmosphere of the lagoon again. Moreover, Barry Unsworth's book is set in three different times (in the 1400’s, in the 1700’s and today). It starts from the restoration of a statue of a Madonna and goes backwards in time tracing the history of the statue itself, the artist as well as the model. This book has everything I like in a book: a beautiful city, a historical setting and art (I simply love books with a painting or a work of art at the core of the narrated events). Well, I didn’t exactly read it in one go… (it’s becoming more and more difficult to devote to reading during the school year) but I really liked it. The different historical events alternate and are told through letters and pages of diaries. Each protagonist wrote parts of his own story: the sculptor told his story in a desperate letter trying to defend himself from terrible charges, the protagonist of the love-and-betrayal story set in the 1700’s wrote his memoirs, while the restorer writes down his impressions about the restoration as well as the results of his research into the story of the statue. So, we almost come into touch with the protagonists and get a general idea of the tragic aura and the intrigues around the beautiful Madonna which seems to have the special power to somehow change those who stay around her.
